Plant Alien WIP redux
Started by booksbydavid a while ago

Here we go again.

By popular demand (actually Holly demanded it) I'm going to start a WIP thread for my newest 3D project. I started talking about this project over in the Carrara and 3D forum, but now I'm moving it over here.

This is the final alien character I have to recreate for the New Worlds Project. I've been doing some work for them for the past year, and I've saved the best (most difficult) for last. This will be my third attempt at getting this character right.

When I started working with the New Worlds Project, I was by no means a figure creator. I'd never modelled anything more than clothes for the various characters I'd created for use in Carrara and Poser. The last two New Worlds aliens I worked on required me to become a figure modeller no matter what. This last figure is proving to be the most complicated of all, at least for me.

I anticipate some difficulty when it comes to rigging. You'll see why as the project progresses. I know very little about rigging beyond basic human biped figures. This figure is going to be bipedal but not very human. I'm going to be rigging in Poser because, while rigging in Carrara is simple and easy, weight mapping, in my experience, is not. And since I also anticipate using the figure in both Poser and Carrara, I'm going the Poser rigging route.

I'm modeling the figure in Silo. I switched to Silo from Hexagon. I loved Hexagon, but I had issues with it which are never going to be fixed, so after a bit of research I decided on Silo. I find Silo extremely easy to navigate and very robust and stable.

I will be using 3D Coat for UV mapping and perhaps some 3D painting. I used 3D Coat to UV map my last creation for New Worlds. It was the most fun and trouble free UV mapping I've ever done.

Carrara is going to be the final program I will use in this project. I like Carrara's ease of use. It's just plain fast. I'm also much more familiar with Carrara's shader system, and I like the results I get with it. I also like to render in Carrara. I can get superior results in Poser also, but Carrara, once again, is just fast with much less hassle.

That's the background. Comments are welcome and appreciated. As soon as I can figure out how to add images to my posts, I'll get started

I had a play with Anything Grows again. After adjusting some settings, I was much happier with the look I was getting. The original growth was too thick, so I thinned it out a bit. I did try to create a more shaped leaf in Silo, but it didn't work. It imported into Carrara just fine, but when it was applied to Anything Grows it came in upside down. I wasn't able to change it right side up no matter what i tried, so I gave up on that idea.

I think I've got enought leaves now. I was going to stop there, but after Anything Grows has inspired me to add other types of growths. Not sure exactly what they'll look like, but I definintely know I'm going to do a bit more.

Amazing! Great decisions!

How about some filiments or "hairs"... especially around (or in) the eye flowers? Something like lashes but also like pollenators?

I was thinking something like that along with other 'growths' along the arms and legs. Maybe even some 'buds' growing inside the body cavity area.

My biggest problem may be knowing when to stop adding to it all.

Thanks, Danas. I feel a bit guilty because working on this fellow has kept me from doing the work I need to do for you. I will remedy that tonight.

I would love to see this guy in C3DE. I need to complete him and get the 'official' image from New Worlds for that. I've still got a bit of work to do on this figure, but I should be done with him very soon and the approval process (I hope they give final approval) is very fast. We'll see what happens.

This project has been one long learning experience with several different programs. Carrara is the one that is bringing this figure to life. Anything Grows in Carrara is an outstanding addition to Carrara. I can't say enough good things about it. I'm still tweeking and adding more Anything Grows onto the figure. I hope to have more images to share tomorrow.

Well, after a brief break, I sat back down with my plant figure and Carrara. As far as I'm concerned, it's finished. We'll see what the New Worlds folks say about it.

I only ended up adding a bit more with Anything Grows (an outstanding plugin). I stayed away from adding foliage to the arms and legs. While I doubt I'll be able to effectively rig this figure, I may be able to pose it using tools in 3DCoat and extra foliage would just complicate matters, I think.

Anyway, here's a selection of views of what I hope is the finished version of this plant alien.

Stunning work. Truly alien.
worSHIP worSHIP

And although it's off topic, you just remind me all over again why I'm not that interested in Genesis... There is SOOOO MUCH MOOORE to 3D.

Thank you. Embarassed

Your comment isn't all that off topic. It is 3D after all.

This entire project, everything I've done for the New Worlds Project, has forced me, kicking and screaming, to delve deeper into the possibilities of 3D. By the time I was half way through my contracted work for New Worlds, I realized I was swimming in the deep end of the pool. Sink or swim. I may not be ready for prime time, but I can darn sure make my own figure if I wanted to now. I'm pretty proud of that.

This whole experience has inspired me to consider creating other figures for my own use as well. I've got a few ideas. We'll see how things go.

I never felt the need to upgrade to Genesis. By the time she came around, I could already do what I needed to do with V4, V3, and just about any other figure out there. Why buy into Genesis? And Genesis offers me nothing that would pull me over to the 'Genesis' side. Heck, if I want to play with figures I've got Vicky 3 andd 4, Aiko 3, Steph 3, MyMichelle, Antonia, Mariko, Ang 2.0 and for toons SuzyQ2 and Cookie. I've got plenty of toys to play with and variety. I'm happy.

I'll be a lot happier when I hear from New Worlds about this final (hopefully) version of the plant alien. Smile

Well, I just got some tentative feedback from New Worlds on this project.

Initial reaction is..."I absolutely adore them...amazing!"

Needless to say, I'm a pretty happy camper. Even the managing director's fiance chimed in with positive comments.

I'm waiting to see what the rest of the group thinks before I move on to final renders, but it looks good so far.

That's some very impressive modeling and texturing Booksbydavid. I'm especially impressed by the Anything Grows plugin. That's definately going on my "to buy" list.

Fingers crossed you'll get the O.K. from New Worlds. (Can't see how they wouldn't)  {#emotions_dlg.thumbs}
