Carrara9 end of an era?
Started by Stan a while ago

Yes "oh no it's Stan with more gloom and doom".
But I really have to wonder. C8.5 has been in development for what 2 years now, for a point release? And what is in that release we will have to pay for? Some tweaks to existing features and genesis?
So what about C9. The way DAZ talks it will be out next year {lol fat chance} but I have seen no features list, no idea what if anything new may be in it. Will it be no more then compatable with DAZ's soon to be released dolly? The next gen of genesis?
It has become quite clear DAZ is incabable of giving us what we need in carrara let along what we request. DAZ's development of carrara has slowed down to a pace that makes a snail look speedy.
So the question is, have enough carraraests been disillusioned by DAZ to give up on carrara? Has carrara lost enough users for the development of it to no longer be profitable.
In other words will C9 be the swan song for carrara?

I take it the caching bug isn't fixed yet?

Do I ever shut up?!?

Nope, ain't fixed yet. I hate to bug Holly with it because I am sure she has a lot on her plate right now.

Am I the only one that thinks DAZ is pushing V6 harder then any previous character? I don't recall DAZ giving an across the board 10% off everything just for owning V4 or V5. But then I hate the hard sell anyway. Any one remember when sales at DAZ were something special? Now they seem constent.

Up to last year; from the time I was conscripted by DAZ; when they bought C5, I had joined the Pclub in september to take advantage of the fall sales. I usually spent around $100 over the fall sales. I didn't last year, doubtful I will this year; which is absolutly dependent on C8.5's release. It seems since they had the change up on corperate oficers a couple of years ago DAZ has went hard sell and constent sales. The monthly freebies went out the window. The Pclub has lost benefits. And it seems to be an all or nothing push of content.

It seems app development has slowed to a stand still on all apps, not just carrara. Anyone remember when studio was getting an update every month?

G1 was released with issues. New figure and a drastic change from the previous figures means expecting issues. But unlike V4 where we got the .1 and .2 updates to fix issues, we have a new genesis figure, with new skins, new morphs, new clothes....

Is this DAZ's new marketing format? Realease a new figure every year to sell you all new everything?

As I have pointed out being able to use previous versions of most items; clothes, skins, on new figures is a boon to me. It means I can move forward with previous investments. Hirez skins and high quality clothes are not cheap, being able to use them going forward takes away the aprehension of buying them now.

A while back runtimeDNA had a big sale on Mil 2 clothes. I bought some outragiuosly nice clothes for V2 and M2 at some ludicressly low prices; I like that And even though I have cleared out most of my mil2 figures and skins, I still have the runtimes for the Xdresser converted clothes. So I can actually use V2-XD-V4 clothes on G1. I bought the Mil3 morphs for genesis so I could use the mil3 clothes. What this means is I have a massive; if ill fitting, selection of clothes for G1. Now in Studio I can do some jump jump to get them on to G2, but you can guess what a converted-converted-converted set of clothes look like {#emotions_dlg.excruciating}

I am holding off spending anything on G2, and have spent as little as possable on G1, simply because I don't know where DAZ is going with this. Now I spent a fair chunk O change on Hirez skins for the mil4 figures, I'm over joyed I can use them on G1. So not only did my investments in skins go the ditence; the mil4 figures were suported for quite a while, they crossed over. But with the state of the econimy, and my very limited budget, I can't afford to keep throwing good money after bad every time DAZ cranks out a new figure.  It was great my mil4 items crossed over to G1, but it doesn't look like it will be as smooth a cross over to G2.

They're running behind—public release will be the beginning of August, but Dawn will be free initially, for weight-mapped Poser and separately for DAZ. Supported by Runtime DNA, Renderosity, and Hivewire3D off the bat. http://www.digisprawl.com/blog/news/a-new-dawn-due-this-weekend-for-some/

Well I guess any good Carrara/DAZ3D conspiracy theory wouldn't be complete without the DAZ3D/Carrara cheerleader showing up to spread some controversy towards reluctant thinking, right?

I gotta say... "What?!!!"

Yup. I agree that adding Genesis support to Carrara has taken a toll on those who have to make the changes. But to say that DAZ doesn't have our interests at heart is pretty short sighted, in my honest opinion. Many of your requests and even demands are being addressed through this whole thing. And to just turn around and bash them is just horrible! Now there are complaints that they don't keep us informed. Why? Because they're treated like malfunctioining droids more than like human minds, trying to cater to the masses. Who can blame them for turning off the intercom?

Genesis support has ended up bringing a lot more to the table that mere dolly support. They've created .duf and have retooled Daz Studio because of it - after the release of Genesis. Genesis, which won several awards for being such an ingenius and well concieved figure. Many of us will likely never quit using it.

All 3d figures need software to run them. All software has its quirks. So, yes. All 3d figures are released with issues. They all have - and this is not likely to change any time soon. So DAZ comes back with the release of an improved design. Genesis is amazing how it can be the unisex, the omnisex! Well Dawn is a female, and she's getting 'Male' morphs. V4 had Male morphs, too. That doesn't make people want her over M4 though. Except that chicks are hot and guys are... well... the opposite sex! lol (that coming from a guy, of course)

Genesis 2 Female is geared toward being female, and Genesis 2 Male will be the opposite sex. I can totally see the 'want' for such a thing. Blaming it on the hindsightedness of DAZ3D is completely absurd to me. Genesis has already had, what... two years? What's wrong with the introduction to a new character now? Especially one that is based soley upon the requests and complaints of Genesis users? I do not know. Or rather, I do know... and the answer is "nothing".

Personally, when I buy stuff for Genesis, I don't do it to have the developer put the cash in the pocket and keep from pushing forward. No. I want them to have that figure expert continue to try and develop the best damned figure out there. This came from several fronts, I'm fairly certain - without actually knowing. First, from trying to make new morphs for Genesis that can improve it. There are many such products out there - and I'm sure that sales can proove that many of us really love to pay of more figure functionality - rather than to complain that it didn't come with it in the first place. Second, from trying to improve the mesh for reasons requested by support product artists. There are plenty of products out there that state that they're for Genesis Males, or females. This was never the intent. But put yourself in the shoes of the artist tring to make this really cool thing for his or her fans, but are stuck trying to make it work with morphs that change the sex of the body! PITA, I can only imagine.

Genesis 2 made in both sexes can change all of that. Oh my, am I still babbling on?

Dartanbeck let me help you out with a few of those misconseptions. Wink

"But to say that DAZ doesn't have our interests at heart is pretty short sighted, in my honest opinion."

DAZ only has our interests at heart when it boosts their bottom line.

"Now there are complaints that they don't keep us informed. Why? Because they're treated like malfunctioining droids more than like human minds, trying to cater to the masses."

No they didn't like our opinions on how they were screwing up. It's like my X, they don't want to tell us anything they know will upset us, so they don't tell us anything. They would rather slap us in the face with the crap on release. Then wonder why we are upset and threaten to go to other apps.

"Genesis, which won several awards for being such an ingenius and well concieved figure."

Several? Show me these several, the only one I know about was just a twitter popularity contest.

" All 3d figures are released with issues. They all have - and this is not likely to change any time soon."

Yes, but most figures get updates that fix these issues, they aren't left abandoned for 2 years. Lets take V4 as an example. V4 was released with issues, so within a matter of a few weeks we had a V4.1 then V4.2 which solved most all the issues with V4. In 2 years G1 hasn't got any sort of update to fix anything.

"So DAZ comes back with the release of an improved design."

DAZ had nothing to do with G2F aside from brokering it. G2F is a PA figure based on G1. But you know that Wink

" Genesis has already had, what... two years? "

Right and in that 2 years how has DAZ improved it? Right, they haven't. G1 is dead in the water despite DAZ's claims to the contrary. If DAZ was actually still developing G1 we most assuredly would have seen an update before G2F, to addressing the issues.

"First, from trying to make new morphs for Genesis that can improve it. "

Yes, from PAs because DAZ certainly isn't.

"Second, from trying to improve the mesh for reasons requested by support product artists."

Once again done by PAs not DAZ.

"Genesis 2 made in both sexes can change all of that."

Yes it can, and one of the reasons I am not spending a dime on G1. It's a dead figure being replced by G2F, and G2M. But DAZ doesn't want their customers to know this because, heaven forbid, it may cause a slump in sales for G1 content.

Think about this. What has DAZ released or updated in the past two years? I don't mean what PAs have done but what DAZ has done. A couple updates to studio? A very few for the carrara BETA? and what else?

DAZ is becoming little more then yet another content broker. And unlike the rest, are doing thier damndest to lash customers to their apps and their content. Even to the point of removing posts that instruct newbies how to install content with out DIM. DAZ wants captive customers. DAZ is trying to convince newbies that you can't install content to studio with out DIM and can't use it without CMS. There for they can't install or use nonDAZ  content. They are not only trying to gage any info about DAZ compatition, they are trying to convince peopel you can't use anything but DAZ content in Studio. Apparently no one at DAZ has heard the little chick store from the Waltons Wink Yes, there is an old parable that says the same thing but it wont come to mind right now. It's like water, the harder you try to hange on to it, the more of it slips though your fingers.

Now, I'll give DAZ ever chance in the world to prove me wrong, but I just don't see that happening. People don't seem to realize I am 13 for 16 in my assumptions on DAZ. I know peopel give me a hard time about stating assumtions as a fact, but with that track record it's hard not to Laughing

You do realize this is just a counter point, nothing personal, right? You know I bear you no ill will. or is that baer, bare Undecided

Now, as I have said a few times. I like the concept of Genesis. G2F shows just what G1 could have been, but wasn't. But any claims G2F is from DAZ are eronisus.

I loved the concept of Autofit. Being able to use the previous generations clothes was too cool, in theroy. Function leaves a lot to be desired and yet something else left to stagnate for 2 years. I have seen no improvemnt in autofit since release, if anything it functions worse now then when it was first released. But soemthing I have found is that it works much better with mil3 clothes then mil4. I'm going to guess the only way to fix the issues with mil4 clothes is to buy the mil4 morphs, that I was assurd wouldn't be needed to use mil4 clothes.

None the less, if I want to use a dress on a figure in a scene I have to use V4. Autofit gives me no other option. Even on Dawn. And it is all to often that after strugeling with G1 for a while I end up going back to the mil4 figures. As in right now, I descovered last night that I can't use smart props or "hair" hair on G1 {or G2F, or dawn} When I pose the figure they just vanish from the scene. My bad, I should have checked this much, much sooner. But I had always used "figure" hair that went through autofit {which also ruins beards} and no smart props. So now I am at the point I have to back track and redo 3 charcters with M4.

Hell, even optitex dynaimc clothing worked better in DS3 then studio 4 and DAZ has done nothing to fix it.

It is quite plain to see DAZ is farming out content creation and is doing the same for figures. So the question is just what is DAZ doing now aside from brokering PA created content?

Just to point out. I don't have these issues with Spiral graphics. We get to check the betas and they listen. We get to discus features and changes. Of all the time I have been with Spiral graphics and been beta testing genetica there has only been 1 of my suggestions that isn't in the app now; tapper buttons are real tiny. That is it, you wont see me raging there, you wont see me griping there. You wont see me making snide remarks at their expence. Why? because they produce a quality app and are in touch with their customers. They solve bugs ASAP, and take our suggestions seriously, even ethusiastically.

What can I say, 2 days of mowing and I need to be off my feet for a while {#emotions_dlg.rofl}

Did you see the news about the C8.5 release? I prefer to be an optimist and think there will be a C9. I don't say this with a pollyanna attitude.

Do I ever shut up?!?

seeing that C8.5 has more new things in the list than Genesis support only I have hope, if there were no plans to release C9, why should DAZ 3D waste time on improving animation tools? C8.5 comes with some nice updates to interface, performance and some enhancements to some of the tools.

Hopefully C9 will have a lot more exciting developments.

Hope needs a bases. I have read absolutly nothing about C9. Show me a ray of sunshine and I might have a bit of hope.

This 2 year beta has done carrara's reputation far more damage then anything I could possably say. The only way to fix that is for C8.5 to be real good, and C9 to be spectacualar; if there is a C9.

As I have said, if DAZ wants to draw people back to carrara they need to release a free download code for C8 to some magazine shortly after C8.5 comes out. This would bring old users back and new customers in. Then it would just be a small fee{?} for C8.5 to have the update to use Genesis.

What can I say, Eor is my hero Wink
