Carrara9 end of an era?
Started by Stan a while ago

Yes "oh no it's Stan with more gloom and doom".
But I really have to wonder. C8.5 has been in development for what 2 years now, for a point release? And what is in that release we will have to pay for? Some tweaks to existing features and genesis?
So what about C9. The way DAZ talks it will be out next year {lol fat chance} but I have seen no features list, no idea what if anything new may be in it. Will it be no more then compatable with DAZ's soon to be released dolly? The next gen of genesis?
It has become quite clear DAZ is incabable of giving us what we need in carrara let along what we request. DAZ's development of carrara has slowed down to a pace that makes a snail look speedy.
So the question is, have enough carraraests been disillusioned by DAZ to give up on carrara? Has carrara lost enough users for the development of it to no longer be profitable.
In other words will C9 be the swan song for carrara?

Time will tell, but that would be a shame. Carrara is a very friendly application, much more so than Blender for example, and has a lot of functionality in its price range. Daz updated Carrara to effectively use a 64 bit OS, which is nothing to sneeze at. A lot of developers still have not caught up. So I think they have demonstrated some commitment and will continue to keep Carrara current, perhaps not cutting edge in all areas, but very useable.

With Luxus, Carrara 8, 8.5 and 9 are competetive 3D authoring apps regarding functions and especially considering the price/performance.
Luxrender is about to get full GPU rendering (only CPU/GPU hybrid is available now), so things are looking more positive than ever!

The first promo renders of Genesis 2 shows a Carrara product, so it looks like Carrara 8.5 will run Genesis 2 from the start.

Genisis 2, or even Genesis working in carrara is pretty low on my list of priorities. I'm happy DUF works so I can get dynaimc clothing animations from studio to carrara. But I would most assuredly prefer to have dynaimc cloth in carrara.

Yes I am happy carrara is 64bit, but I would have glady sacraficed that for dynaimc cloth or liquid physics.

I'd love to give a list of what new features I want in C9, but you can go back to my list for C6 and use it.

But there are things to take in to considertion. Like dynaimc hair worked great in C6, DAZ broke it in C7 and then made it quite clear they weren't going to fix it.  So now using it is a real PITA to get what I want from it. So not only is DAZ not adding new features we need, they are braking features that worked and refusing to fix them.

DAZ's prioities aren't my priorities and I have to wonder if they are even us carraraests priorities. DAZ's priorities it appears is to get their content working good in carrara, not to make carrara what it once was, an inexpecive alturnative to the big 3.

Seriously, Genesis does NOT seem very important at all...
M5 shoulders look better in renders, but this is not the ultimate everything. Carrara rendering is so stunted by the DAZ figures. There's SO MUCH MORE out there to render.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. We could have had weightmapped figures in carrara the day DAZ bought it. But rather then DAZ adapting their figures to carrara, DAZ is adapting carrara to it's figures. So we had to wait for DAZ to build a version of Studio to have weightmapped figures, and then DAZ had to make carrara compatable with studios weightmapping.

Do DAZ developers back in to rooms? I mean is it just me or does having to wait for another app to get weight maped figures to have weight maped figures in an app that already has weight mapping, just a bit absurd?

DAZ is about to have character/doll competition that forced their hand with G2 earlier than they wanted, perhaps. When Chris Creek (a DAZ founder) opens his site with Emperor Ken and Lisa's Botanicals on July 1, there will be a competitor, and the new site is dedicated to being "software agnostic". DAZ may be scared. I don't know what this means for Carrara, though.

Did not know that Mark. Interesting! How will we find the new site? Sounds like it will already have a strong nature base....

It's been my opinion when Chris left, DAZ lost it's artistic soul.

I  Emailed with Chris back and forth for a while while he was at DAZ. He's good people.

Of coarse we wont see anything about this on the DAZ forum lol
