Natural Eye Reflection for V4 and M4
Started by Conrad3DC a while ago

This is a very simple procedural eye reflection shader I created to try bring a more realistic eye reflection to my animations. It can be used for the tear shader as well. It will reflect any lights in the scene as well as props that are bright. You can tweak it to adjust the amount of reflection and the sharpness of the reflections to your liking.

One note is that if you shoot the face from the side that is the brightest, you will see the nose reflecting in the eye (obviously not a great effect). I spent some time trying to get rid of this but then after analyzing a bunch movies realized that this must be an issue shooting real people as the shots are most always facing the darker side of the face. The great thing about using this shader is that the reflection is not static on the eye surface but tracks the reflection of the actual light as the head and eyes move. It does not appear to slow down rendering time either.

To enhance the effect I placed a large object with a movie texture map of a busy night time intersection right in front of V4. I directed a spot on the object and when rendered, the reflection of the car lights and tail lights driving past were visable in her eyes.  In the images below, I replaced this with 3 white boxes to illistrate the reflection a little clearer.

* The first image below has the shader removed (and minus some skin highlights). The last three were rendered with the eye reflection shader and everything else the same except for her head rotation.
