Carrara God Rays
Started by Crispycraft a while ago

Currently, I'm building a space scene and I'm using a backdrop picture. The picture has shadows that are cast from asteroids and I'd like the shadows to also be cast from the spacecraft to pull everything together, but I know that I need to use the "Realistic Sky" to utilize the God Ray feature, and that eliminates my backdrop picture. Is there a way to keep the backdrop image while using Realistic Sky?

I'm using Carrara 8.5 Pro

You can try using a spot light and applying a gel  [ found in the effects tab at the top ].

Also then play around with the light cone and other effects. You can achieve some nice results but can depend on your background - ie image or 3d and volumetric objects.

Have fun and post your result as an image so we see what you come up with

Actually, the gels wont help as they appear as a pattern cast on an object. I had forgotten how I did the above image.
I made a light rig which consisted of several spots with a cone effect on each. You can vary the cones (size, fall off, brightness, colour etc )for more interest.

But Wait ! there is more. Just looked at my light rig and this is how it was done.
Place a dodecahedron in your scene [ get it free from fenric - four secret primitives ]
Apply a glass type shader to it.
Place a spot light above it and enable light cone in the effects.
In the 'light cone settings' enable both options in 3D shadows. The isohedron will act like a prism. Vary the effect with colour, brightness falloff etc.
Parent the primitive to the spot so you can move them as a nit and replicate for more interesting results.
Carrara is amazing isn't it.

I do really like Carrara! There are so many things that can be done with its tools, and it really makes it fun to work with.

So, with what you were saying above, do you think it's possible to cast shadows from an object using this technique?

Cast shadows ?- absolutely ! Make sure they are enabled ( usually default ) in the light's general parameters however there must be sometrhing to catch the shadow so use a plane for your backdrop with image applied instead of the backdrops found in the scene settings. lights behave much as in real life so with a torch and your hand in front you wont see a shadow without the wall.

You can control shadow intensity in the general tab .Using the spot you can enable cone that may give you other effects . Its a matter of playing around. Have Fun PS if you find an effect/setting that you like dont forget to drag the light to your browser tray if you want to use it again.Suggest you study the lights in the manual if not already done so.

Another example of what you might create .This image used my light rig. Carrara Rocks !

That's kind of the effect that I'm looking for! I'd like that kind of light beam cast from my spacecraft. I'm going to have to play with that a bit
