Carrara 8.5 Running Slow
Started by kodere a while ago

Hi, finally just updated my version to 8.5, been using Carrara since v 6 but now when I add a large scene, such as World Maze from DAZ I can't even pan around the scene. Its very frustrating, Carrara is my fav software. Does anyone know any settings to make it possible to move around?

Hi Kodere,

Can you give details of your system (OS,Processor,Memory,Graphics Card) and is this a recent thing happening all the time or just with large scenes?

Have you made any other changes to your system recently?

I have an Alienware laptop that is running Windows 7, i7-3610Qm CPU @ 2.30Ghz with 16 GB of ram and an Nvidia GE card of some sort, having issues brinding up the graphics card specifics. This is the first issue I've ever had with the laptop, its only when I open the World Maze scene but its a rather large scene. I dont have another large scene to try and load to see if its the same issue. So far everything but this scene works fine.

Oh also, it won't use anything except smart content and refuses to load anything else. So I have genesis 2 without the ability to load characters like Akio 6 on top of it.

Been reading the DAZ Carrara forum and it appears 8.5 is far from working! My version can't load a lot of content that the previous version had no problem with. Tends to be none DAZ Original content, which makes sense since unless the developer(s) update their products they will not take into account the changes to the software. I'll be sticking to DAZ Originals for some months to come from now on. If you meant "World Garden Maze" product it's not a DAZ Originals so doubt it'll be updated.

If your having problems with Aiko 6 I'd definately put a ticket in and report it, the more problems that are officially reported the more likely they are to fix the problems.

Others have also reported similar problems since the upgrade, so it maybe something that will be changed with future bug fix.

From a technical point of view I think Carrra uses OpenGL to pre-view a scene so it will be dependant on your graphics cards memory size as to how large a scene you can preview.

Have you tried clearing out your temp directories and done disc drive housekeeping (Right click on C: drive/select properties/ select tools tab/click optimise) may possibly be running short of space on your drive (have you checked free space size?)

Hope this helps.

Something else that's occurred to me that you could check is that you have Spool texture to disc checked and Reserved memory set to the maximum in preferences. This is the amount of memory allocated for textures (Max 2.08 G on my system) once that's used up it will spool the textures to disc.

Well I just checked my free space and I still have 338 Gig free so I dont think thats it but I'm going to play with the spool texture like you said and see if that helps though I don't view the scene with the textures on so I'm not sure if that really plays a role...

If your not viewing the textures in preview then it probably isn't, like you say, and neither of the options I've given will help.

Can't think of anything else to try I'm afraid Kodere. If it was me at this point, I'd raise a ticket with the DAZ helpdesk.
